The Supreme Court declared Deri's appointment as minister ineligible, just as expected. A majority of ten justices supported Deri's ineligibility. Only one conservative Justice Elron opposed, pointing out that primarily the chairman of the electoral commission should have decided whether Deri's actions involved a violation, only then could the Supreme Court discuss ineligibility of the minister.
The Supreme Court's decision certainly does not add stability to Israel's political system, which has already been in dire straits for the past four years. It is clear that political instability benefits the highest legal officials in the country, who seriously fear that the current right-wing government will force them to return the powers that they have taken from the legislature (the Knesset) and the executive (the government) through the violations of the laws and regulations.
The coalition is discussing possible solutions to the crisis, while the opposition is promising to torpedo any government decision. A serious crisis of the Israeli political system is evident.
The current situation shows how urgently Israel needs the legal reforms advocated by the Minister of Justice, Yariv Levin.
