Chassidim Always Wrote “Rebbe, King Moshiach”

In 1953, I visited R. Avraham Paris. When I entered his home, I saw him writing a letter (PaN) to the Rebbe. He called me over and said, “Look here, I’ll show you how to write to the Rebbe.”

Then he covered the letter with his hand so that I couldn’t see its content, showing only the beginning where he addressed the Rebbe as “Rebbe, King Moshiach.”

R. Berke Chein, who spent many years in Siberia for spreading Judaism, also behaved in this manner. He recounted that once he entered the Rebbe’s office and, as usual, handed over a request for a blessing in which he addressed the Rebbe as “HaMelech HaMoshiach.” The Rebbe looked at the letter, then at the Chassid and asked twice, “Why did you write ’HaMelech HaMoshiach’?” The Rebbe corrected him and said that it should be written “Melech HaMoshiach.”

During a meal at the home of the Rebbe Rayatz on Rosh Hashanah 1968, R. Shmuel Levitin asked R. Avraham Paris to lead the blessing after the meal, but he refused.

Afterwards, R. Avraham explained to R. Yochanan Gordon the reason for his refusal, saying that if he had led the prayer, he would have said, “With the permission of our master and teacher, Rebbe, King Moshiach.”

A few days later, on the eve of Yom Kippur, R. Gordon went to the Rebbe and said, “May Hashem fulfil what R. Avraham has said.”

When he finished the story, the Rebbe looked at him with a smile and said, “So be it.”
