A political drama took place in Israel last night as Netanyahu resigned Defense Minister Galant. According to the Prime Minister, the reason for the resignation was the loss of confidence in Galant, who had already for a long time, acted contrary to the policies that Netanyahu sought to pursue.
In particular, there were deep disagreements between them over the issue of how to release the hostages. Galant demanded a deal with Sinuar (who, as we now know, had no intention of making any deal at all and was simply stalling, hoping that the anti-government protests would eventually weaken Israel and force it to surrender) at almost any cost, even if it required an end to the war, an IDF withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and a withdrawal from the Philadelphi border corridor.
The new Defense Minister will be Yisrael Katz, known for his tough stance against terrorist organizations, his determination and his ability to successfully achieve his objectives. Already now the terrorists are in panic, as many of their statements indicate. It should be recalled that Yisrael Katz has served in the past as Intelligence Minister, Finance Minister and Foreign Minister, and is also a member of the narrow cabinet, so he has a lot of experience in national security issues.
Gideon Saar will be appointed Foreign Minister.
Right-wing circles support the prime minister's move.
Minister Ben-Gvir said that it was simply impossible to win with Galant, because he remained committed to the notorious “concept” - i.e., the previous approaches of the army establishment, which finally proved their failure on October 7.
The ultra-religious parties also expressed their approval. It should be reminded that already, as it seems, knowing about his impending dismissal, Galant took an openly political step, realizing that it would not be implemented anyway, but it would provide Galant with the halo of a “victim for the truth” among the opponents of the government. Galant recently issued 7,000 draft summonses for ultra-Orthodox Jews, as well as 800 “pre-arrest orders for those who refuse to be drafted. In the past, he has also always opposed a conscription law that could settle this complex and painful issue despite the fact that the ultra-religious parties have long agreed to increase conscription quotas by hundreds of percent and raise them by several thousand annually (in addition to the thousands already conscripted under previous targets).
