The Israeli defense concern Rafael Advanced Defense Systems announced yesterday that over the past three years it has been developing an innovative missile defense system, the 1st of its kind in the world, specifically designed to intercept hypersonic missiles ( which are at least 5 times faster than the speed of sound). The system is called SkySonic.
The Rafael announcement stunned many experts. At the same time it showed how innovative and advanced is the sphere of protection against missiles in Israel, because hypersonic weapons themselves are still virtually nonexistent, and certainly not a single country in the world yet has the ability to intercept it. In other words, Israel’s interception system might be the most advanced in the world.
However, the system is still under development and is not ready for use. Once its development is complete, it will be added to the main units of the Israeli missile defense, which already includes laser interception systems that are also designed to shoot down hypersonic missiles.
